Do not get pressured into choosing a Dj because they will not be available at a later point! (Beware of the following devices and what to avoid)Shock Strategies used to push you: - Persuasive selling is when a company forces you to make a quick, uniformed decision.
- If a Dj Group cannot guarantee its price, availability or terms within a realistic time frame they are indirectly bullying you & are trying to dissuade you from doing adequate research.
- Using a “special deal” to encourage you to book immediately and to stop you from looking elsewhere is coercion and can result in you feeling uneasy with a rushed decision.
- Saying a Dj is booked on a “first come, first served” basis is a bulldozing device which makes you unsure of possibly losing a good Dj to another Bride, once again persuading you to make an immediate decision.
- Some Dj Groups inflate their initial quote & then make a “last minute” reduction so that you feel like they are doing you a favour & make you feel obliged to take their “special” offer.
- A Dj Group should respect your wish to consider all your options before making a final decision.
- When a Dj Group brings up the authenticity, legitimacy or legality of another company they are trying to undermine the competition & prey on your fears.
- Ways of bringing up certification assertion include suggesting the company should produce a Dj license which in fact does not exist & is not required by any province or venue to perform. Also claiming that a company should be licensed with SAMRO or SAMPRA for private events is another diversion device, as Dj’s are not required to retain such licenses.
- Saying that you should book with someone (like them) who is licensed or certified is just another way for them to place doubt in your mind about their competitors.
- Stating that a company should be operating from an existing office space to avoid being subject to them just disappearing with your deposit is irrelevant to the group’s ability to perform & is another shock strategy used by some to make you feel like something will go terribly wrong if you choose a different company.
- Look at all your options first before making a deposit or final decision!
- Contradiction & Diversion that focuses on the unimportant:
- Some companies use visual tools to “sensationalise” themselves & trick you into picking them, unless you have specifically requested visual material these have no bearing on the Dj’s ability to perform. Rather look towards referrals & testimonials to get a better perception of them.
- Often once you have discussed your specific music selection with a sales rep for the company they will play your requirements and other familiar favourites in a onsite “demo” of what you can expect on your special day, however consider that the sales rep giving the “demo” may not be a Dj themselves or if they are, may not be the actual person who performs at your wedding.
- Also the equipment used in the “demo” is not necessarily the gear that will be used on the day & is likely to be a permanent set up at the offices which in turn does not give a true reflection of what will be used on your wedding day. Making the “demo” a fun experience but poor indication of what to expect – Distracting you from making an informed decision.
- A marketing DVD is another device that is used by some to make themselves look good, it can be edited and only reflects brilliant performances of other weddings which are not necessarily similar to your venue, requirements or set up.
- First impressions are very important & by viewing an edited DVD you miss out on the face-to-face contact that will help you “feel” if the person you’re dealing with has the right knowledge & confidence to achieve the standards you want for your special day.
- If a company offers you the option to “view them perform” at another event to help you decide on them as your prospective Dj, consider what this says about the company’s business practices with regards to respecting other Brides privacy and using them to hook another client. Remember that once again what you are seeing is not necessarily similar to your venue, requirements or set up diverting your attention from the important things to look for when choosing one of the most important elements of your special day (discussed in a later article).
- Remember the age old saying “Don’t judge a book by its cover.”
- Beware of companies that use a professional sales rep to “sell” themselves to you as they are trained & paid to convince you that they are the “best” and only option before looking elsewhere, they are not the ones who are going to be at your wedding making it a success.
- In these cases they will use various marketing tools to trick you into focusing on unimportant factors, when the companies reputation & standing in the Dj community should be sufficient evidence of their ability to create your vision for the entertainment of your special day.
- One on one contact with your Dj is the best way to ensure that you are comfortable with the selection you are going to make. Focusing on what’s important to you and your needs will help you from getting trapped by the above mentioned devices. Doing sufficient research and being aware of the above will help you in this vital part of planning and success of your special day, ensuring your guests have a wonderful time!
